Every January we get Spelling Bee fever here at St. Bon’s. It is always a fun but intense event which we look forward to each and every year. The Spelling Bee aims to put more emphasis on the importance of developing our student’s aptitude for spelling. In addition to improving students’ spelling skills and increasing their vocabularies, spelling bee participation provides valuable experience in developing poise — a necessary skill for success in public speaking, performing arts and athletics. After all classrooms from grades 4 to 8 decide on their winners, the school bee takes place in the Aula Maxima where we decide on our two school finalists. We have had many exciting bees over the years and we believe it helps to heighten interest in this important skill. The two finalists then go on to compete in the Telegram Spelling Bee, usually held at Holy Heart Theatre here in St. John’s. The champion of The Telegram Spelling Bee will then represent Newfoundland and Labrador in the Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C. each year.
